Foundation of the Archive

The Pierre Favre Archives were founded at Coláiste Iognáid under patronage of Headmaster, Padraic Lydon to commemorate the 500th Jesuit Jubilee. The Year 2006 marked a triple Jubilee: the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Francis Xavier SJ and of Blessed Peter Faber SJ, and the 450th anniversary of the death of St. Ignatius Loyola (July 31).

The Project will be part-funded by Coláiste Iognáid, and all archive works will be carried out by the college students, members of staff, and patrons wishing to participate.

We expect the project to grow in size over the next few years.

Project Ambitions

Coláiste Iognáid aims to establish a fully web-based digital Archive, storing all documents and photographs dating back to the College foundation in 1645. The Archive will be available publically for viewing online by past and present pupils alike.

Over the years, many events and occasions have been captured in photograph by friends of Coláiste Iognáid, it is our aim to source key photographs missing from our collections, and make these available to a wider audience.

Unfortunately, many photographs have gone missing over the past years. Most notably, class photographs from the early 1900s. We hope to recover these, and restore them to their former glory.

Your Assistance

If you have any photographs you wish to add to the Archive, please email a digital copy to archive@favre.ie, or send it to the attention of Terry Howard, Coláiste Iognáid, 24 Sea Road, Galway. Any items received will be treated with care, and returned to you in due course.
